HISTOPATHOLOGICAL PATTERNS OF ENDOMETRIUM IN ABNORMAL UTERINE BLEEDING: STUDY FROM A TEACHING HOSPITAL IN SOUTH INDIA
Abstract
Introduction: Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB), a common complaint in gynecology department, is defined as any type of bleeding that does not fall within the normal ranges for amount, frequency, duration or cyclicity. Because higher number of endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma are seen in peri and postmenopausal females, it is safe to submit endometrial curetting for microscopic examination in every case of abnormal uterine bleeding.
Aim and Objective: To know the incidence of abnormal uterine bleeding in various subgroups of patients in different age groups and to identify the associated histopathological changes in the endometrium.
Material and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study in pathology department, Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences, Eranakulam, Kerala. Our idea was to evaluate 400 patients with abnormal uterine bleeding to know the distribution of cases in various age groups and to record the endometrial pathology. Data obtained in this way entered in Microsoft Excel and analysis done by SPSS version 16.
Results: Our study showed that 44% cases of abnormal uterine bleed occurred in perimenopausal age group and majority of bleeding occur due to functional causes. 12% of abnormal uterine bleeding were caused by organic lesions like endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma which were common in postmenopausal age group.
Conclusion: Histopathological evaluation of endometrium in post and perimenopausal Abnormal Uterine Bleeding is very helpful in detecting the precursor lesions like atypical hyperplasia and endometrial carcinoma. Keywords
