HEIGHT ESTIMATION USING PER-CUTANEOUS ULNAR LENGTH IN GWALIOR REGION

Akhilesh Trivedi, Massarat Jehan, Sudhir Saxena

Abstract

The present study made an attempt to estimate the stature from Per-Cutaneous Ulnar Length (PCUL) by formulating simple regression equation for people of Gwalior region. A random sample of 210 male and 210 female students of G.R. Medical College, Gwalior between the age group of 18-21 years was chosen. PCUL of right and left side were measured with the help of spreading caliper. The mean PCUL for male was significantly (p<0.0001) greater than female which was found to be 27.09±1.293cm and 24.87±1.236cm respectively. The observed height was 164.6±8.027cm and 155.4±5.775cm for male and female respectively. The regression formula derived for male was y0=96.706+2.51(x)PCUL ± 7.361 and for female was y0= 89.997+2.63(x)PCUL ± 4.786 . A significant positive correlation exists between the stature and PCUL using simple regression analysis. This study is recommended in anthropological and medico-legal cases for stature estimation amongst the ethnic group under study.
