EVALUATION OF THE ROLE OF PROPHYLACTIC ANTIBIOTIC VERSUS NO ANTIBIOTIC IN CASES OF GROIN HERNIA SURGERY

Abstract


Introduction: Evaluation of the role of prophylactic antibiotic versus no antibiotic in cases of groin hernia surgery.

Aims and objectives: Comparison of the rate of post operative wound infection  in groin hernia repair with or without antibiotics prophylaxis, and rationalise the use of prophylactic antibiotics in groin hernia repair.

Material and Methods: Prospective comparative study of all patients undergoing hernia surgery 18 month period at large teaching hospital. Post operative days in hospital and minor wound complications.

Results: In this study of 60 patients of groin hernia repair 3(10%) patients had developed minor wound infection in each group while no patient developed major wound infection.

Conclusion: With standard aseptic precautions in operation theatre clean groin hernia surgery can be performed without antibiotic in properly selected patients. Prophylactic antibiotics are not routinely prescribed for groin hernia surgery. Use of prophylactic antibiotics need to be rationalised according to risk factors in selected patients.
