EFFICIENCY AND DETERMINANTS OF HOUSEHOLD SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT - A COMPARISON OF TWO URBAN SETTINGS OF KERALA

Anupa Leela George

Abstract

This study was designed to determine the existing problems of solid waste management in two urbansettings. Theproblems that were assessed were the factors impeding the effectiveness and efficient solid waste management which have contributed to solid waste management problems. Structured questionnaires were administered with respect to socio-economic and solid waste management data. Interviews and personal observations were also used to collect some of the data. The results show that of all the factors used in the model, municipality and social group had the greatest impact on household’s Waste Management Index to better deal with solid wastes. Even as municipality usually reckoned as non-economic factor played a prominent role in determining efficiency, households income exerted only insignificant role in determining Solid Waste Management efficiency.

The study concludes that solid waste management problems are partly the result of urban local bodies inability to cope with the situation because of lack of equipment, personnel, and inadequate utilization of funding. Therefore, the study recommends that the waste management authority’s effort in the area of education should be intensified in order to sensitize the people on the need to keep the surroundings clean. The participation of the private sector, government, NGOs’ and the international community in offering adaptable solutions towards improving solid waste management situation in Kerala is also needed.
