EFFICACY OF T-TUBE IN TREATMENT OF PERICHONDRIAL HAEMATOMA (HAEMATOMA AURIS) IN COMPARISON TO SIMPLE INCISION AND DRAINAGE UNDER LOCAL ANESTHESIA
Abstract
Perichondrial Haematoma is a frequent complaint especially in the younger age group involved in contact sports. If not treated properly, it can progress to abscess formation, chronic scarring and subsequent disfigurement of auricle. For satisfactory results the haematoma should be drained within 7 days of the injury. This study aims to determine if there is a significant advantage in employment of passive drainage method in form of T-Tube in comparison to simple Incision and Drainage under local anesthesia with respect to the primary resolution rate and rate of complications. 50 patients of haematoma auris, in the age group of 20 to 50 years, were taken into this study and were divided into two groups: Incision and Drainage group and T-Tube method group. All the patients were followed up for period of 12 weeks.
Patients where T-Tube method was used, 22 (88%) showed primary resolution without cosmetic deformity, 3 (12%) required repeat procedure and out of 3 patient requiring repeat procedure 1 (4% of total) developed complication. Patients where I and D method was used 3 (12%) showed primary resolution without cosmetic deformity, 22 (88%) required repeat procedure and out of 22 patient requiring repeat procedure 3 (12% of total) developed complication.
The T-Tube method is an elegant method of treatment of Haematoma auris and probably superior to Simple Incision and Drainage method as patients treated with T Tube have a significantly higher resolution rate, significantly lower resolution time, does not require a repeat procedure and chances of complications are significantly lower.
