RISE OF CHINA AS A MARITIME POWER AND ITS INDIAN OCEAN FORAYS

Kush Kumar Gayasen

Abstract

This paper tries to trace the trajectory of China’s rising maritime power and its growing naval expansion in the Indian Ocean region. The rise of China as a maritime power has foremost implications for regional as well as global security. China's increasing naval capabilities and expanding maritime presence in the Indian Ocean have raised concerns amid its neighbouring countries, particularly India. In order to sketch a broader picture of Chinese maritime strategy, this paper examines how the Chinese navy has evolved over the years and what imperatives have led China to expand its forays in the Indian Ocean region in the aftermath of the Cold War era.
