GOD’S ANGST AGAINST STERN FUNDAMENTALISM IN IMTIAZ DHARKER’S ‘POSTCARDS FROM GOD’

Honey Singhal, Sujata .

Abstract

Imtiaz Dharker, who calls herself a Scottish Muslim Calvinist, launched her career in poetry as a feminist poet in 1989. Her poetry encompassed women and added scintillating momentum to the existing feminist movement. Her first book, ‘Purdah & Other Poems’(7) ignited the flame of feminism and gave rise to a novel conviction to female writers. She had instigated an impetus to not only feminism, but also against fundamentalism in her next book ‘Postcards from God’. In this paper, Dharker embodies the agony immersed in society in response to the forbidding and stringent waves of fundamentalism. She communicates this grim subject matter in a quirky way as she conveys her thoughts from the perspective of God. Her outlook to this issue substantiates her contribution to the battle against religious fundamentalism which is practiced as a revolutionary movement in the name of god.
