THE IMPACT OF PORTRAYAL OF SEX AND VIOLENCE IN MEDIA ON OUR SOCIETY

Abstract

In our everyday world experience we are faced with violence and cruelty which leads to endless problems and sufferings. No day pass when we don’t get any news of violence in forms of different kinds of conflict and crimes across the world right from the morning by means of radio, television and newspaper. All these sources of media play an important role in our day to day life. They are important sources of information, entertainment, growth, development of society, addressing of various problems in society and so on. On one hand, they give us useful information about the world and on the other hand, the sexual and the violent behaviour that media show are directly and indirectly responsible for the violence and crimes which takes place around the world. In today’s world, media including movies is very big on showing and advertising sex and violence. The sex and violence which media show have a negative impact on our society especially on children because they believe, see, and react to the things seen on media as a result children and youth adopt what media shows. They adopt aggressive or anti-social behaviour, irresponsible sexual activity, sex discrimination and so on. They do not understand the difference between reality and entertainment. Not only children or youth but adults also follow what media portrays leading to increased rate of violent crimes and other unacceptable sexual behaviour.
