A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF BHARTṚHARI AND DIGNȂGA PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE

Ankit Chaurasiya

Abstract

Indian Philosophical tradition has been enriched by great contributions from profound thinkers on both orthodox and heterodox side. Bhartṛhariis a grammarian who believed in authority of Vedas, whereas Dignaga is a Buddhist philosopher who did not believe in any authority. Bhartṛhari’s philosophy is characterized by the central concept of sphota and Dignȃga’s philosophy is characterized by the focus on apoha theory of meaning. Both the viewpoints have been directly influenced by their understanding of reality. While Bhartṛhari’s philosophy is influenced by the notion of ultimate reality based in the vedic tradition, Dignȃga’s understanding has been inspired by the doctrine of Pratītyasamutpȃda which is one of the central doctrines in Buddhism. The major concerns of my paper are what is denoted by the word and how does meaning arise.
