COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ROLE OF COLLAGEN PREPARATION AND CONVENTIONAL DRESSING IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXTERNAL ULCERS INCLUDING BURNS IN 100 CASES
Abstract
Introduction - Ulcer healing is a challenging task for every surgeon as well as a burden to the health infrastructure due long period of hospital stay, repeated dressing leading to economic burden to patients and the health provider. An ideal dressing material should help to control infection, reduces the pain and hasten the rate of healing without any complications. We evaluated role of collagen dressing in healing of ulcer.
Material & Methods - Hundered patients with ulcer were selected in this study and were allotted two groups based on computer generated random number collagen and conventional dressing. Dressings were changed according to standard protocol and wounds were examined for wound size, control of infection at the time of dressing.
Results - In 50 patients collagen dressings was applied, and conventional in rest 50 patients. The mean hospital stay in conventional group 6.31+/-2.19 weeks & in collagen group 2.81+/- 1.02 weeks; P < 0.05 which is highly significant showing collagen dressings reduces hospital stay. Patient compliance was better for collagen dressings.
Conclusion - Collagen dressing is safe and effective in the treatment of ulcer and significantly reduces hospital stay, better cosmetic result, better patient compliance and reduced requirement of skin grafting. Keywords
