CLINICAL AND FOLLOW UP STUDY OF LIGATION OF VAS DEFERENS AND VASOVASOSTOMY
Abstract
Introduction: The sterilisation operation on males is known as V.T. or Vasectomy. Vasectomy has been a popular and ideal method of birth control because it is simple, economic, effective, reversible in good number of cases and have very minimal complications. The importance of vasectomy is great in family planning, particularly where the general population is poor like in India. The cost of operation is one-tenth of providing free supply of contraceptives to cover the complete period of reproductive span. Moreover, other methods are not 100% reliable. The testicular changes following vasectomy has not been studied much in humans. Hence this study aims to find out the postoperative complications vasectomy, its effect on the psychology of the persons concerned, its effect on the testes and various factors effecting the success of vasovasostomy.
Material & Methods: The present study was carried out on 205 males of age 22 years to 55 years, admitted during January 1976 to August 1978. Complete history, clinical examinations, relevant investigations and divided in two groups for - a) vasectomy performed followed by histopathological examination and, b) for vasovasostomy performed in previously vasectomised patients. Patients were regularly followed up for two years. Postoperative complications and their psychosexual problems and testicular changes recorded.
Conclusion: Vasectomy is a painless procedure with minimal and manageable complications. Psychosexual problem can also be dealt with proper counselling. Vasectomy does not produce any testicular changes. Keywords
