TRENDS IN HEALTHCARE PRACTICES IN AN ETHNIC GROUP OF ASSAM

Abstract


Ethnic people are generally live in harmony with nature and maintain a close link between man and environment. North East region of India is very much diverse in its terms of customs and traditions. The different tribes maintain their distinct identity and sub-national aspirations of their ethnic groups. A rich diversity of flora and fauna of this region has provided an initial advantage to its inhabitants for developing their own traditional knowledge for health care practices. In the present paper an attempt has been made to highlights the trends in health care practices among Deori, an ethnic group of Assam, North East India. It was found that the health care management among Deori is a combination of modern, ethno-medical and magico-religious practices but their preference always inclined towards ethno- medicine for remedial of a disease.
