ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES OF BHUMIJ DOMINATED VILLAGE: A DETAILED CASE ON AGRICULTURE

Abstract

Objectives: To understand the principle economic activities of the community. To evaluate the economic profile of the studied population. To study the division of labour in the studied community.

Methodology: The contextual data has been collected through Participant Observation, Intensive Interview, Case Study and the secondary data have been collected from books, journals, internet sources, etc.

Discussions: The present study covers a broad area of economic activities of a particular Bhumij dominated village named Barameytala. Not only it covers the economic profile of that village but also focuses on their main economic activites like agriculture, types of soil, crop types, religious activities associated with agriculture, etc. A unique activity included under the present study was the annual crop calendar of village. Also, a very detailed process of paddy cultivation and measurements of items needed for paddy cultivation were discussed. A detailed description of micro economy of paddy cultivation of a particular personal of that village was given and the data was collected by case study method. Here also, other cultivated crops such as potato and mustard seed cultivation, their process of cultivation, their needed materials for cultivation were included under present study.

Conclusion: This study is very much unique from other studies as the same deals with a very unique discussions like crop calendar, detailed process of paddy cultivation, process of ploughing, processing of rice preparation from paddy, associated rituals linked with the cultivation, other important cultivations like potato and mustard seed. So, this study is of great importance for study of economic anthropology. It also covers all the perspectives related to economic activities of a particular tribal dominated village.
