Abstract

This research aims to clarify the meaning of the truth found in mādhyamika school of Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta with special reference to Candrakrīti and Shaṅkarachārya. It is ‘truth’that has been a prominent topic in Indian philosophy in general. The topic, viz. truth isan essential part both in Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta. Shaṅkarachārya used the term ‘Sattā’(i.e. level or being) however, it is ‘satya’ (i.e. truth) in another term. But either in methodological approach or in the ultimate meaning of the term, we often get confused when we come across similar facts in different disciplines. The present paper therefore concisely examines and compares the philosophical truth according to Candrakrīti in mādhyamaka tradition and Shaṅkarachāryain Advaita Vedanta. It also tries to clarify the ambiguous positions with respect to the above mentioned scholars and come to the conclusion.
