RUBBER BAND LIGATION OF HAEMORRHOIDS - A PROSPECTIVE STUDY

Vishal Dubey, Ritesh Dixit

Abstract

Rubber band ligation is done by ligating haemorrhoids with rubber band at its base .It is an outpatient procedure done mainly for grade 2 and 3 haemorrhoids. It is a day care procedure with low pain potential and shorter phase of recovery as compared to traditional surgical treatments. 60 patients of grade 2 and 3 haemorrhoids were included in this study. In postoperative 48 hours, pain was mild to moderate in 47 (78%) and 12 (20%) patients managed successfully on analgesics with only 1 patient had severe pain (1.6%). Postoperative complications as bleeding per rectum in 2 patients and infection and slippage of band 1 were observed. After 6 months of follow up, 45 patients (75%) were asymptomatic. Mild to moderate symptoms continued in 12 patients (20%) and relapse occurred in 3 (5%).
