ACQUIRED RECTOVESTIBULAR FISTULA- AN EXPERIENCE FROM A RURAL MEDICAL COLLEGE
Abstract
Aim: We discuss our experience with acquired rectovestibular fistula in our institute in a rural set up.
Material & Methods: There are 6 patients in this study. All of them underwent regular anal dilatation with supplement of lactobacillus (stool hardener). In patients, where this management did not work, surgical repair was done.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 4.5 months, range from 3-6 months. Three of the babies improved with regular anal dilatation leading to the closure of the fistulous tract whereas three did not respond to the anal dilatation protocol. These three infants required closure of the fistulous tract.
Conclusion: A high index of suspicion for early diagnosis of acquired anovestibular fistula is needed as it is a very rare anomaly. The acquired rectovestibular fistula can be surgically repaired when conservative treatment with dilatation fails. Keywords
