Abstract

Background: Interventional radiologist and surgeons must be conscious of anomalous origin of testicular arteries to avoid unexpected complication during surgery and interventional procedures.

Objective: Evaluating the incidence of normal and aberrant origin of testicular arteries and level of origin of testicular artery.

Material and Methods: A total of 33 cadavers were taken both the fresh cadavers arrived in mortuary and preserved in the Department of Anatomy at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur. Laparotomy done with midline incision up to the pubic symphysis and dissection carried out to expose retroperitoneal structures after routine dissection of the abdominal cavity.  Site and level of origin of testicular arteries noted.

Results: Testicular artery originates from the antero lateral surface of abdominal aorta below the level of origin of renal arteries usually at L2 level and obliquely runs downward(6). Rarely testicular artery may arise from renal artery or other arteries such as middle supra renal artery, lumbar artery, common or internal iliac artery or inferior epigastric artery.

Conclusion: Testicular arteries commonly originates from anterio leteral surface of abdominal aorta at L2 level(6). But very lower down origin from abdominal aorta and origin from renal artery has been noted and knowledge of such variations are very crucial for different surgeries and interventional procedures.
