REDUCED PORT LAPAROSCOPIC APPENDECTOMY- A PROSPECTIVE STUDY

N.S. Harish, B. Gurunathreddy

Abstract

Introduction: Standard laparoscopic appendectomy is 3-port appendectomy, our study to describe method, advantages of 2-port laparoscopic appendectomy using prolene needle loop in a case of uncomplicated appendicitis.

Materials & Methods: 39 patients were taken for the study from May 2015 to June 2016, study conducted prospectively in all patients with presumed appendicitis, 2-port technique involves 10mm umbilical port for camera, 5mm working port in lower midline, standard third port was replaced in right lower quadrant by needle with prolene loop.

Results: Total 39 patients were taken for study, 34 patients underwent 2-port technique with mean time 45 mins of which 2 patients developed minor complications, 2 cases were converted to open appendectomy, 3 cases were converted to 3-port laparoscopic appendectomy.

Conclusion: 2-port appendectomy significantly reduces complication rate, duration of hospital stay, post operative pain, decreased invasiveness and better cosmesis.
