Abstract

Co-dependency is a significant offshoot of dependence or addiction. It is a phenomenon frequently seen in the family members and friends of addicts. Co-dependents develop an indirect addictive behavior and require help and support to overcome this self- destructive attitude. In Kerala, where alcoholism is a major social problem the present study investigates co-dependent behavior among the wives of alcoholics, meeting at Alcoholics Anonymous in Southern district. Even after their husbands had managed to free themselves from the clutches of alcoholism, these women continued the behavioral pattern adopted to cope with their spouses’ problem. Co-dependency seemed independent of the original dysfunctional behavior that caused it. This phenomenon was investigated. They were given awareness class and administered questionnaires. The analysis of the statistical data obtained revealed no significant co-relation between co-dependency and dependency. Remedial measures were suggested and adopted to overcome their problems.
